The Samurai had to be brave, just, faithful and polite. He served his master diligently and was prepared to enter a blood feud or commit seppuku to defend his family's honour.

The Samurai was primarily a professional soldier, but could also be a scientist, philosopher, writer or official. In addition to his profession, he was a father, son and husband. The Samurai - A Thousand Years of Cults and Culture - presents a holistic perspective on Samurai culture.
